Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment addresses the inside of a tooth when the pulp is irreversibly inflamed or infected. The root canals are cleaned and sealed to help preserve a tooth that can be safely restored.

Root canal treatment may be indicated for certain deep cavities, injuries or infections. Pain alone cannot determine the right treatment; an examination and appropriate tests are needed.

The tooth is assessed, isolated and its root canals treated. Afterwards, rebuilding and protecting it with an appropriate restoration is essential.

One or more visits may be needed, depending on the tooth’s anatomy and any infection. The final restoration and follow-up reviews are also part of the plan.

Anaesthetic is used when indicated. The tooth may feel sensitive when biting during recovery. Contact the clinic if symptoms worsen or swelling or fever develops.

Avoid putting excessive pressure on the tooth until its restoration is complete. Maintain oral hygiene and attend follow-up appointments to check healing.

Not all teeth can be preserved. The infection may persist, there may be a fracture, or a retreatment or alternative may be necessary.

Not always. It depends on the remaining tooth tissue, the position of the tooth and the forces during chewing. Some teeth benefit from a restoration that covers the cusps.
